UEW final-year student found dead in hostel after days of isolation

Tragedy Strikes UEW as Final-Year Political Science Student Found Dead in Hostel Room

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) community has been left in deep shock and sorrow following the heartbreaking discovery of a final-year Political Science student found dead in his hostel room under distressing circumstances.

The male student, whose name has not yet been officially released, was found on the evening of Tuesday, June 11. His body was discovered after fellow students detected a strong, foul odour coming from his locked room, which had persisted for several days. Alarmed by the smell, they forced the door open — only to be met with the tragic sight of their colleague’s lifeless body.

Reports indicate that the deceased had been suffering from a severe leg infection, which caused chronic pain and significantly limited his mobility. Additionally, he was known to live with sickle cell disease, a condition that further worsened his overall health.

“He was a sickler and had painful sores on his leg that often emitted a strong smell,” one student revealed. “His roommate left because of that, so he was living alone.”

This forced isolation may have played a role in the unfortunate turn of events. In an effort to cope with the stigma and manage the unpleasant odour, the student reportedly kept himself locked in the room, cutting off access to help and support. It is believed he passed away several days before his body was eventually found.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the UEW campus, igniting serious conversations about student welfare, chronic illness support, and mental health services.

“This is more than a tragedy — it’s a wake-up call,” a concerned student representative said. “We must do more to ensure that no student feels abandoned or suffers in silence.”

University officials have since launched a full investigation into the incident. Authorities have also pledged to review existing welfare policies and support systems to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
