On Wednesday, December 11, President-elect John Dramani Mahama visited the Jubilee House at the invitation of President Akufo-Addo. The meeting focused on the inauguration of a joint transitional team aimed at ensuring a smooth transfer of power following Mahama's electoral victory.
Ahead of the formal engagement, the two leaders held a brief but cordial discussion, during which President Akufo-Addo expressed his full support for the transition process. The President emphasized that the early meeting was meant to reassure Mr. Mahama of the government's commitment to facilitating a seamless transition.
"It is in the interest of all Ghanaians that I brought him here," President Akufo-Addo stated, explaining the importance of ensuring that the new administration starts under the best possible conditions.
The meeting, which was a stark contrast to the tensions seen during the campaign period, was characterized by warmth and cooperation. President Akufo-Addo, reflecting on his longstanding relationship with Mr. Mahama, acknowledged the latter's familiarity with the presidency.
"He's familiar with this place. He was here before I came. He's back here again. He knows exactly what is entailed," President Akufo-Addo remarked.
President-elect Mahama, seated alongside the President, responded positively, highlighting the cordial nature of their conversation. He recalled the congratulatory call from President Akufo-Addo following the election results and expressed his gratitude for the early meeting to discuss the transition process.
"I had the opportunity to thank him for his gracious call," Mr. Mahama said. "We had a very cordial meeting, and we were very happy to be together."
He also expressed optimism about the transition, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration. "I’m happy with the assurance that we will work together in the interest of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition," he added. "It will be necessary to keep a channel of communication open to strengthen Ghana's democratic credentials and work for the national interest."
Earlier this week, Mr. Mahama announced the formation of a 10-member transition team, with former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah appointed as co-chair. In response, President Akufo-Addo also named members of the government’s side of the transition team.
The appointments were made in accordance with the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), ensuring a legally grounded and smooth handover process.
