Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice-President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially conceded defeat to his main opponent, John Dramani Mahama, following Ghana’s 2024 Presidential Election.
In a statement made from his residence on Sunday, December 8, 2024, Dr. Bawumia addressed the nation, saying: “After yesterday’s presidential and parliamentary elections, Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, have been anxiously awaiting the outcome. I want to inform you that based on the data from our internal collation of election results, it is clear that former President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has won the election decisively.”
Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by top NPP officials, including the National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim and his wife, Samira Bawumia. He disclosed that he had personally called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him on his victory. “I just spoke with His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and congratulated him as the President-elect of the Republic of Ghana. I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of two things: Ghana will win, and peace will prevail.”
The NPP leader emphasized that his decision to concede was made to reduce tension and maintain peace in the country. “The people of Ghana have spoken. They have voted for change, and we respect that decision with humility. I am making this concession speech ahead of the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to help prevent further tension and preserve the peace of our nation.”
Dr. Bawumia reassured the public that the NPP remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition of power. “As committed democrats, we pledge to ensure a smooth transition so that the business of government will continue without disruption. The NPP will offer the necessary support to the new government in a responsible manner.”
While acknowledging the disappointment among his party supporters, Dr. Bawumia urged them to stay optimistic. “To the members of the New Patriotic Party, I know this loss hurts, as it is not the result you worked so hard for. But I assure you, we will regroup and come back even stronger. We may have lost this battle, but not the war.”
He also expressed gratitude to several key figures, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, his wife Samira Bawumia, his running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and the entire NPP for their unwavering support throughout his campaign. He further extended thanks to traditional leaders, religious organizations, the Electoral Commission, security agencies, the media, and all Ghanaians for their contributions to the election process.
Concluding his speech, Dr. Bawumia remarked, “Ghana is bigger than any individual’s political ambitions, and we must always prioritize the interests of our country. Ghana has won. Thank you, and may God bless you, and may God bless our homeland, Ghana.”
Dr. Bawumia’s concession paves the way for a peaceful transition, as Ghanaians prepare for the swearing-in of President-elect John Dramani Mahama. The final official results from the Electoral Commission of Ghana are still awaited.
